The Feast of the Seven Fishes - La Vigilia - is a beloved Christmas Eve tradition across Italian-American households. Its Catholic roots are in the custom of abstaining from meat the night before Christmas. Italian families turned that restriction into a celebration and a lavish, multi-course seafood meal that ran late into the night. The number seven is a nod to the seven sacraments. This tradition gained new traction thanks to the memorable seven fishes episode in the streaming series The Bear.
We're bringing that tradition to the Teaching Kitchen where you'll work through a series of classic seafood preparations — think garlicky shrimp, briny mussels, a delicate whole fish and spicy seafood pasta. You'll learn the techniques that make each dish unique and gain some tips and tricks for quick, flavorful seafood.
Expect a hands-on, festive evening with plenty of good food, good company, and a few new tricks for your own holiday table. Whether your family has celebrated this tradition for generations or you're discovering it for the first time, you'll leave with recipes worth repeating every Christmas Eve to come.
Meet Lili! A Teaching Kitchen fixture, Lili has taught classes at Red Stick Spice for more than six years. She has made a career out of teaching others how to prepare delicious meals that are approachable, delicious and show-stopping gorgeous. A lifelong learner, Lili is incredibly engaging, full of insight and makes learning fun.
This is a hands on class that ends in a full meal. All students receive a store discount.
This class is for participants 13 and up. Teenagers must be accompanied by an adult; both the teenager and accompanying adult must purchase a class seat.
CLASS TRANSFER POLICY: No Refunds. If you are unable to attend this class, you may request a transfer to move your reservation to another class. However these requests must be received seven (7) working days in advance of the class date. If your request is made after seven (7) working days, we will not be able to accommodate your transfer request. You may, however, pass along your place in this class to another person. Planning and staffing takes place well in advance of each cooking class; therefore, we are unable to offer refunds.
